Vineyard Report
A welcome winter of plenty of rain filled profiles in the soil to saturation not seen in the past three seasons, following this was good rains into spring and after budburst reminding us of a typical Adelaide Hills Spring of old.
At flowering a burst of heat in early flowering favoured the white varieties and Shiraz although Cabernet Sauvignon set was subdued. This was the last we saw of summer heatwaves in vintage 2010 and the result is thought to be one of the best seasons for whites for some time.
Natural acid was the order of vintage and presented some exciting, juice analyses as the flavours developed. The whites had the highest acids I had seen in any vintage with a cool approach to harvest the Chardonnay showing true refined peach and nectarine, Sauvignon Blanc a complex blend of herbaceous characters and gooseberry, Riesling citrus sherbet and stone fruit.
After the whites we had respite in vintage with a good two week gap then the Shiraz with strong peppery plum and Cabernet Sauvignon cassis and sublime!
If only every vintage was like this, buy up and cellar these. You’re bound to impress at parties for years to come.
